Interesting Facts/Historic Buildings and Places
Now open the public, the extraordinary Thunderbird Lodge on the lake shore a few miles south of Incline Village is one of the few examples remaining of the period when wealthy San Francisco families built grand residential estates at Lake Tahoe. Built over several years from 1936, Thunderbird Lodge was owned by George Whittell, who originally planned to develop his 40,000 acres and 24 miles of lakefront into high-class summer properties, a ski run and a huge hotel-casino. Fortunately for future generations, Whittell’s interest in animals, nature and privacy overcame his business ambitions and he retained the property in its natural state until his death in 1969. The Lodge itself comprises numerous large and interesting buildings which reflect Whittell’s insistence that they should blend harmoniously into their pristine setting and be built using craftsmanship and materials of the highest standard.
A short drive from Incline Village, the fascinating Virginia City offers a unique glimpse of an original Old West mining town in the mid-1880’s. Situated atop the fabled Comstock Lode, the rip-roaring town’s gold and silver mines produced vast wealth which is said to have financed the Civil War, as well as the building of much of San Francisco. Although 80% of its original buildings were destroyed by fire in 1875, a few remain, like the MacKay Mansion, built in 1860 by John MacKay, the so-called “King of the Comstock”; the First Presbyterian Church, built in 1866; and the celebrated “Saint Mary's in the Mountains”, Nevada’s oldest Catholic church.
Among Virginia City’s other notable historic buildings, the Storey County Courthouse was rebuilt in 1876 after being almost destroyed by the great fire and still serves its original purpose, making it the oldest continuously operating courthouse in the state. Nearby Piper's Opera House was built in the 1880s and attracted famous entertainers from Europe and the East Coast. The city also boasts numerous museums, among them the Julia Bullette Red Light Museum, with its history of the life and times of Julia Bullette, a well-known Virginia City prostitute of the 1860s, and its display of vintage erotica and antique medical equipment.
